WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, today announced the Army Corps of Engineers (Army Corps) will allocate North Dakota $533,907,500 in funding from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) for flood protection, water supply, infrastructure, and recreation projects. Through his seat on EPW, Senator Cramer was a key architect of the law and helped shepherd it through Congress. The funding includes $61,450,000 for permanent flood protection in the Souris River Valley, $437,000,000 for the construction of permanent flood protection in the Red River Valley, and $20,150,000 for recreational maintenance around the Garrison Dam and Lake Sakakawea.
“This funding is a big win for our state, as North Dakotans know how painstakingly slow the Army Corps can be. The funding from the bipartisan infrastructure package is crucial to protecting our state against future floods and improving our communities’ water supply and wastewater facilities. It also makes much-needed investments in Lake Sakakawea’s recreation access. I am glad to see the infrastructure package already doing good work for the people of North Dakota,” said Senator Cramer.
The North Dakota projects secured by Senator Cramer include the following:
The senator has been active in producing the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Traditionally enacted every two years, WRDA addresses water infrastructure projects related to ports, inland waterways, levees, dams, wetlands, watersheds, and coastal restoration under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works program. Senator Cramer, who holds jurisdiction over the Army Corps as the EPW Subcommittee Chairman on Water and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, secured the inclusion of several North Dakota water infrastructure projects, including the Souris River Flood Protection Plan to provide future flood protection for residents throughout the Souris River Basin in North Dakota.
